       6th Grade Language Arts

Pearson Studies

This week we will be working exclusively From our Pearson online book. We will continue to look at the big question: Is Conflict Always Bad? Our focus will be on comparing and contrasting Various texts that all focus on the gold rush of the 1800s.

Nov. 2nd- Nov. 10th WEEK OF SCHOOL!

              rEADING JOURNALS

As of tuesday (sept. 8) we should be keeping a record of what we read outside of school, every night.

THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION SHOULD BE WRITTEN IN YOUR READING JOURNAL EVERY DAY: DATE, NAME OF BOOK AND AUTHOR, STARTING PAGE, ENDING PAGE, MINUTES READ, AND PARENTS SIGNATURE.

Your READING JOURNAL SHOULD NOT INCLUDE TEXTS READ FOR SCHOOL. INSTEAD, IT SHOULD INCLUDE BOOKS OF YOUR OWN CHOOSING.

REMEMBER: THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF EACH DAILY ENTRY IS YOUR PARENTS SIGNATURE!!

EVERY SUNDAY NIGHT YOU ARE TO WRITE A TEN SENTENCE SUMMARY ABOUT WHAT YOU READ THAT WEEK. IT IS NOT A BOOK REVIEW BUT INSTEAD YOUR CHANCE TO TALK ABOUT WHY YOU LIKED WHAT YOU READ, CHARACTERS WITHIN THE BOOK, and YOUR REACTIONS TO THE STORIES AS THEY UNFOLD. BE CREATIVE IN WHAT YOU WRITE AND DON'T JUST WRITE A SUMMARY OF THE PLOT.

(KEEP IN MIND THAT YOU CAN BE READING MULTIPLE BOOKS A WEEK.)

Extra Credit

Students can choose two of the following:

1) Write a 500 word letter to a friend telling them about a book that you have read with the purpose of convincing them to read it themselves. This is not a book report or a summary of the plot (if you tell them everything then why would they want to read it?). You can give some details of the plot and characters but don't give away everything that made you enjoy it so much. Write about two certain events in the first half of the book that you particulary enjoyed and explain why you had the reaction you did to them. Be sure to explain in detail why you fell in love with the book (author's writing style, being able to relate to a character, being able to relate to the story) and explain in detail the range of emotions that the author exposed to you. This should be a detailed piece of descriptive writing that really focuses on your reaction to the book. Try and use descriptive language and remain enthusiastic about the book throughout the letter.

Worth: Worth one homework grade and replaces your lowest homework grade.

2) Make a powerpoint presentation on one of your favorite books and present it to the class. The purpose is to convince your classmates to read the same book so you should be enthusiastic throughout the presentation, giving details about the book (but the entire plot) and explaining why you enjoyed the book so much (author's writing style, being able to relate to a character, being able to relate to the story). Also, explain in great detail the range of emotions that the author exposed to you. The presentation should be at least 3 minutes in length.

Worth: Replaces your lowest homework grade.

Both of the extra credit assignments are due: 10.16
